My Jamesway

Hello Friends
So in this post i figured i would tell/show you what it is like to live in "summer camp" at the south pole. Summer camp is what they call the group of jamesway tents that are a short distance from the station. Each "hut" is made up of canvas and wood (these things have been around FOREVER). within each jamesway there are small rooms sectioned off by more canvas or wood, and if you are lucky (i am not) your room has real door.

In my room i have a bed, a desk, and some shelves. I lucked out and got a room that has carpet so the floor is not as cold as some. I am also lucky that i am in the middle of the jamesway where it tends to be warmer, if you are stuck on the ends by the door your room can stay quite cold. In some cases you may end up with snow drifts in your room if there are tears in the canvas (but this can be fixed by hanging a blanket over the canvas). The higher off the ground you can get your bed the warmer you will be, because the floor and under the bed are quite cold...like sometimes liquids will freeze if you leave them there for too long.

So some people my be a little grossed out by this next part but...The bathrooms in summer camp are located in the middle of all the different jamesways, which means you have to go outside and leave the comfort of your nice warm room if you have to use the bathroom. SO many people who live in summer camp find themselves a "pee can". This is what one uses in the middle of the night instead of having to get up, put on your big coat and go outside into the super bright light (which wakes you right up)to the bathroom. Working in the kitchen i get lots of requests to save jars and bottles that have lids for people to use as "pee cans". You may thinks its kinda gross, but if you lived out in a jamesway a fair ways away from a bathroom you would want one too.
So i may have made the jamesways sound really horrid to live in, but my room is actually rather cozy, and i have been nice and warm when i sleep. I do not spend a whole lot of time in my little room since i work in the main station, and tend to hang out in there as well. But the lounges out in "summer camp" are pretty fun too, especially not that we have hung up a disco ball and some stage lighting its a nice place to hang out before or after work.
